Failure is an intrinsic part of experimentation, creativity and inconveniently, life. It’s said if you’re not failing often then you’re not trying hard enough. We celebrate the beautiful screw ups, the happy accidents, the painful flaws and the Epic Fails.
For this issue we’ve taken the idea of failure in all its variant forms and looked for the beauty, humour and wisdom gained from these unwanted mishaps.

20 Hz observes a geo-magnetic storm occurring in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. Working with data collected from the CARISMA radio array and interpreted as audio, we hear tweeting and rumbles caused by incoming solar wind, captured at the frequency of 20 Hertz. Generated directly by the sound, tangible and sculptural forms emerge suggestive of scientific visualisations. As different frequencies interact both visually and aurally, complex patterns emerge to create interference phenomena that probe the limits of our perception.

Worlds in the Making is an epic three channel moving image work that explores how we observe, experience and create an understanding of the physical origins of the world around us. By appropriating the tools and processes of volcanology to re-interpret the primordial landscapes of our volcanic planet, Semiconductor create a world slightly removed from the one we think we know, disrupting our every day assumptions of reality and questioning how science affects our experience of the natural world.

Inferno Observatory is a multi-channel moving image work that explores our complex relationship with natural phenomena. During a fellowship at the Mineral Sciences Laboratory in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington DC, Semiconductor unearthed a 16mm volcano film archive shot by volcanologists in the field, it reveals spectacular occurrences and curious, obsessive and sometimes absurd processes of observing and studying volcanoes.

Fraternity was shot at Yale University’s infamous DKE frat house in under an hour. The men were happy to participate in the project in exchange for a keg of beer. They compete against each other to shout or scream the loudest and for the longest time. When they cannot scream any longer they must stop, and cannot begin again. DKE (pronounced Deke) stands for Delta Kappa Epsilon, and counts five US presidents in its alumni, including George Bush Jr, George Bush Sr, Gerald Ford and Theodore Roosevelt. Other famous Dekes include three Justices of the US Supreme Court, one Vice President, and countless State Governors, Senators and Speakers.

Cymatics is the process of vibrating a medium like powder or liquid to visualise sound. Luminaries such as Da Vinci, Gallileo and Hooke have all produced work using these observations of resonance. In 1680 Robert Hooke was able to see the nodal patterns associated with the modes of vibration in glass plates. Then in 1787 Chladni created a similar experiment using a metal plate, covering it with sand and then stroking the edge of the plate with a violin bow. The list of applications is growing, artistically it can be used to recreate the natural forms of nature where as in science Cymatics is being used to visualise sonar beams within dolphin communication research.

A virtual pottery wheel which gives visitors the chance to ‘turn’ their own forms.

Aside from the ceramic printer, Unfold created a virtual pottery wheel in collaboration with Tim Knapen. This pottery wheel gives visitors the chance to ‘turn’ their own forms. At regular intervals, a selection of these designs is printed in clay and exhibited in the space. In this time-lapse video you see the print process close up.

In L’Artisan Electronique, pottery, one of the oldest artisanal techniques for making utilitarian objects, is combined with new digital techniques. The virtual pottery wheel was realsied by means of a 3D-scanner and digital design software. However, the installation still clearly refers to the artisanal process of working in clay. The printing process imitates the traditional technique used by ceramicists, in which the form is built up by stacking coils of clay.

L’Artisan Electronique is an installation commissioned by Z33 Art Centre for the exhibition Design by Performance and developed in collaboration with Tim Knapen and the RepRap community.
As a girl skips down a street, her stride becomes bigger and bigger, and then she jumps over towns, a forest, the sea, going higher and further. Finally she reaches a country in wartime. This work is very interesting in that the girl’s jump turns into a god’s jump, to a point where she is watching over human destiny. This work surprised the entire world because the whole film was shot in one cut with 4,000 motion pictures.
Slithering is a alternative dance documentation where the dancer dances and reacts with the Slithering program. The program scans from a camera a one pixel wide segment and orders these segments to become one long picture in time. In this project the dancer has to find a completely new kind of movement, if she wants to control the visual end result. It also changes the documentation of dance in time and space to now happen only in time. What is dance minus space?
